About This Program
Program Overview
The Youth Organizing program equips young people with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to become effective advocates for change in their communities. Through hands on training in community organizing, civic engagement, and leadership development, participants learn how to identify issues that matter to them and take meaningful action to address them.
Grassroots Leadership Training
Participants learn the fundamentals of community organizing from experienced organizers and activists. Training covers essential skills including community mapping, power analysis, campaign planning, coalition building, and strategic communication. Youth develop the ability to mobilize their peers and community members around shared goals and values.
Civic Engagement and Advocacy
Understanding how government and institutions work is essential for effective advocacy. Our program teaches participants about local, state, and federal government structures, the legislative process, and how to engage with elected officials. Youth learn to write effective letters, prepare testimony, organize meetings with decision makers, and navigate the policy landscape.
Issue Campaigns
Participants work together to identify pressing issues affecting their communities and develop campaigns to address them. Past campaigns have focused on educational equity, environmental justice, youth employment, public safety, and access to mental health services. Youth lead every aspect of campaign development from research and strategy to outreach and action.
Public Speaking and Communication
Effective organizers must be compelling communicators. Our program provides extensive training in public speaking, storytelling, media relations, and digital communication. Participants practice delivering speeches, conducting interviews, creating social media content, and crafting messages that resonate with diverse audiences.
Community Building
Strong relationships are the foundation of successful organizing. Participants learn techniques for building trust, facilitating difficult conversations, resolving conflicts, and creating inclusive spaces where all voices are heard. These skills serve youth well beyond their organizing work, strengthening their personal and professional relationships.
Mentorship and Support
Each participant is paired with an experienced mentor who provides guidance, support, and accountability throughout the program. Mentors help youth navigate challenges, celebrate successes, and connect with opportunities for continued growth and leadership development.
Real World Impact
Graduates of the Youth Organizing program have gone on to lead successful campaigns, serve on community boards, work for advocacy organizations, and pursue careers in public service. They carry forward the skills and values learned here, contributing to a more just and equitable Minnesota for generations to come.
